for me in British English, a plug and the bit in the wall is also a plug
but the Americans says that this hole in the wall where the plug goes in, that's the receptacle
that is another use for it although in British English I would jsut say the plug
I guess it's desigened to hold the plug

I am thinking about this seaweed that has these little bubbles and it floats on the surface, these are receptacles
they use this word in biology quite a lot as well
