but we use this metaphorically meaning to help somebody excessively

he's always forgetting his lines when he was in front of the camera we had to spoon feed him his lines

you could say to politicians very often sup with the devil and they should have a long spoon
they thave dealings with dangerous people and they've got to be very careful
it's like distancing yourself from the problems
