Bestride : (~위에) 다리를 벌리고 앉다 (동작/움직임/자세의 완성), ~을 지배하다, 점령하다

to be more important than

the dictator has been in power for 30 years and he bestrides the recent history of his nation
it's like he is standing over with one leg on either side of nation
