360. Ongoing vs Underway - Difference - GRE Vocabulary

Ongoing : 계속 진행 중인
Underway : 이제 시작한, 막 착수한, 이미 진행중인 (최근에서야 시작한)

Well Underway : 한창 진행중인 (시작한지 좀 된)

Get something underway : ~을 시작하다, ~을 진행하다

 

1)
Ongoing is just an adjective
whereas, Underway, you could look at it as an adverb or as a prepositional phrase

If somehthing is ongoing, it's happening now
whereas, if something is underway it's happening now but there's a big different.

if you say something is underway, you've said it has started
whereas if you say something is ongoing, it's continuing, it probably started quite a long time ago

the change is finally underway, they are implementing the changes, they have started to do it, changes are getting underway
whereas changes are ongoing, you've already started and they are continuing, it's not something you started five minutes ago

 

the negotiations are ongoing, they're continuing
the negotiations are underway, they've started

an ongoing challenge
an ongoing commitment
an ongoing controversy
an ongoing debate
an ongoing problem
something that started in the past and it is continuing, it has been happening for quite a long time and it seems like it's going to continue for quite a long time in the future
it's continuing, it's developing, it's advancing, it's progressing, it's proceeding
constant, relentless, continuing, it seems to be unceasing, ceaseless

if something is underway, it has already started
an investigation is underway, we've started the investigation
the film was well underway when I arrived
something that has just started, just begun
it's again in progress but getting started, begun in motion, begun in peration
this implies much more recently

after we got underway, I felt more relaxed 
you can also get something underway

notice, this well underway is a nice collocation, it had started quite a long time ago
but underway, this is talking about it has stated
whereas ongoing says it is continuing
I think that's the major difference between the two
