209. Alight - Adjective Adverb Verb - English Vocabulary

Alight : (차량에서)내리다, (~에 날아가)앉다, 착륙하다, 불붙은, 불타는, 빛나는

Alight on (우연히)~을 생각해내다, ~을 발견하다

Set something alight ~에 불을 붙이다, ~을 태우다, ~을 불태우다

 

1) 

To alight, to get off a train or a bus or an airplane

To get out of something

I alighted at the bus stop that was near the cinema

it is also possible to use, to alight from a horse

Formality : 6

 

2)

To alight, to land on, to come down, to touch down

The airplane alighted on the runway to land

A butterfly alighted on the flower that I was looking at

My eyes are alighted on the book that I was looking for

Someone alight on something, means to find something unexpectedly to see sth you want to expecting

Formality : 6.5

 

3) 

As an adjective

Alight, on fire, burning

A car was alight and there was a danger of expolsion it on fire, it was inflames, it was ablaze

Notice that, alight is what I call a post-positive adjective, if you use it with a noun, it's got to go afterwards

you can't say an alight candle, you can say an candle alight

Formality : 5

 

4)

As an adjective

It also has a meaning, to shine

All the illumination in the house was alight 

It was glowing, it was illuminated

Formality : 5

 

5) 

As an adverb

To set something alight 

To make it burning, to get it burning

He used petrol to set the bonfire alight

To set the world alight

His performance in the cricket match set the crowd alight
