30. Litotes vs Meiosis - Rhetoric

Litotes : 완서법, 곡언법, 부정문을 이용하여 opposite characteristic 을 강조하기위해 사용

Meiosis : 재치있게 특정 사건이나 인물을 과소평가, 축소시켜서 표현하는 방법

 

Litotes
-> when emphasizing something by using the negative of opposite characteristic
-> trying to add emphasis
-> it's very bad --> it' not good 

-> He was quick to accept the offer --> He wasn't slow to accept the offer

-> normally using the negative to amplify the opposite charateristic

-> talking about rhetorical ideas
-> formality 7 - 8

 

Meiosis
-> understatement 

-> trying to reduce the intensity of something
-> trying to decrease an emphasis
-> this is not at all easy to do --> this is a tad difficult or this is a tiny bit difficult

-> actually it is very bad--> it might be better
-> talking about rhetorical ideas
