let's see, very often we use figurative language
we don't use a literal meaning but we use a figurative meaning
a literal meaning is the real meaning of something, whereas the figurative meaning it's more imaginative and it creates a speical effect
for example, go through, I went through the forest. this is literal. but I went through a difficult situation. this is figurative I am using go through here figuratively
figurative, figuratively, it's using metaphors it's using similes it's language that it doesn't carry the exact meaning
it's got a metaphor, a simile, a metronome within it
if I said you eat like a pig. here I am not using pig this literally because you are not a pig you are a human but I am using here pig figuratively. it represents this
this comes from the idea of a figure, a figure is a  representation of something
a representation that you've drawn or you've made a model of
a bronze figure for example
a figure, a shape
this goes on to the phrase a figure of speech, this is a word or a phrase that is different from the normal language that we us
we are using it to create a parallel, an analogy, a simile, a metaphor
very often instead of saying the British Parliament or we say Whitehall and this is used to refer to the British Civil Service. this is synecdoche as well
this is effectively part of rhetoric using words figuratively
this is a language that is not using its basic meaning, you use it in order to create a special effect. this is the idea of figurative language
speaking figuratively, the negotiators mananges to bridge their differences to build a bridge between their differences
it is not the literal use of words
it's symbolic
it's metaphorical
it's represents something else
it's a figurative description
it's a figure of speech
if you use something in a figurative way, you are suing it with more abstracat concepts with  more imagination than just the ordinary meaning
Germany is the center of the European Union, well literally it's in the center of Europe and figuratively it's probably the most important country in the Europhean Union
