Esq. is a contraction of Esquire
when do you sud Esquire?, when you write a letter to somebody you could write John F signs Esq. or John F sings Esquire
you use it instead of Mr.
this is old-fashioned but you could still see people letters with somebody's name Esq.
you can only use this on an address for a man
notice, you can't put Mr. Kl Pate Esquire . you should put either one or the other. Kl Pate Esquire (Kl Pate Esq.) or Mr. Kl Pate
you could write a Squire as well on an adress on an envelope
an interesting fact about that is if you receive an invitation to go to Buckingham Palace, if you a British man then the invitation letter will say is Squirie after you name. However if you are foreign it will say Mr. without Esquire
so I think it's assuming that all British men are gentleman and above (which is related to the origin story of this word below )
