248. Chivvy - British English - English Vocabulary

Chivvy : (특히 하기싫어하는 사람을) 서두르게 하다, 재촉하다, 귀찮게 다그치다, 이동시키다, 얻다, (여우)사냥하다

Chivvy sb into doing :  ~를 ~하게 하다, ~가 ~하도록 재촉하다

Chivvy sb along : ~을 계속 재촉하다, 계속 다그치다, 계속 귀찮게하다

 

1)

To nag or to hassle somebody into doing something

If you'v ever tried to get kids readly for school in the morning, you have to chivvy them along

In the evening, children they really don't want to do their homework, so you've got to chivvy them to write their reports

to nag, to badger, to keep saying come on doing, to hassle, to plague

to chivvy along

the charity tried to chivvy the govoernment into enacting the law

to hurry them up

 

2)

to chivvy, to harass sb with little attack

the press is always chivvying the politician

political opponents were chivving the prime minister

to chivvy sb into doing something

 

3)

to get someting, to move something by a lots of small maneuvers

I have to chivvy the car out of the parkinig space, because there were too cars really close to me

I have to chivvy onions with a knife moving to get it to come out

the idea of annoying it with little attacks or little maneuvers

A good commander will chivvy his troops along, he will use a few well-placed words

 

4) 

to chase or to hunt, to run after, to pursue, to harass

particularly for fox hunting

to chivvy the fox

the dogs were chivving the fox
